Chapter 10
***
She finally found the ideal person.
Until now, she believed that reality and fairy tale ideals were different.
Even a prince could not make everything perfect.
‘The fairy tale wasn't a lie.’
In Kanna's mind, she had already met the prince and was strolling through the beautifully landscaped gardens.
Then he grabbed her hand and pulled her toward him.
At that moment, the prince, who was about to hug her, stopped moving.
Her imagination was stopped because….
"Is it okay to walk already?"
Someone behind Finberg had cautiously emerged.
"Yeah, I don't want to be lying around on a big day like today."
It was Lynette, standing beside the crown prince with a lovely smile.
"Hmmm, there's already a cute little princess next to the Prince."
Pisco whispered in Kanna's ear.
As if he could read her imagination.
"...."
Kanna struggled to keep her posture straight.
<I have Riley, so I thought we should send her to Renpesi...>
The girl smiled innocently, throwing Kanna's life into the gutter.
If it weren't for her, Kanna would be living her dream in Hilt right now.
Perhaps then she would have met the crown prince in a different light.
No, she would have met him with a completely different face.
"Barely a baron's daughter, what princess?"
Kanna sneered, and Pisco snorted with laughter.
"Barely? You're not even a baron's daughter."
"..."
"A tanner's daughter."
"Will you shut up?"
Kanna glared fiercely at Pisco.
"Honey, there are some things you just have to admit, even if you don't like them."
Pisco grabbed Kanna by the shoulders and spun her around so she was in direct view of the stairs.
"Like the fact that she's a princess."
Kanna slapped his hand down, but her body refused to cooperate.
"I've never seen anyone so beautiful in my life."
Though angry, Kanna could not deny Pisco's words. The baron's daughter was beautiful. No more than 15 years old, she had an air of nobility about her. Chestnut-colored hair that gave her an air of calm intelligence, large, kindly golden eyes.
"Isn't she naturally pretty when she's dressed like that?"
"Maybe she's pretty in your own eyes, too?"
Pisco stammered, but Kanna didn't respond.
‘There's another reason.’
There was more than beauty in the girl's eyes. Kanna wondered about that. What was it that made her so beautiful?
'Your background, I suppose. A wealthy family and plenty of money made you who you are.'
Even as Kanna was at war with her reality, Pisco didn't stop praising Lynette.
"Maybe we're here because of the princess's infinite grace."
"Cut the crap."
"Look at her lovely, angelic face. She's probably asked the Crown Prince to invite the poor lords of Trokan."
Kanna's lips twitched at the exaggerated tone of his voice, as if he were putting on a play.
"How naive. Don't you know that the most vile of demons usually have the face of an angel?"
Pisco chuckled at Kanna's comment.
"Like you?"
Kanna strained her white, cracked hands.
The more she thought about it, the more she hated her.
The more she smiled, the angrier she became.
Even as Kanna's anger gathered in her curled hands, Lynette was speaking softly to the Crown Prince.
"By the way, is that the famous blond Prince Argos?"
Kanna's gaze shifted at the sound of Pisco's voice.
‘Prince Argos?’
Frail and delicate.
Anxious eyes on an impassive face.
Kanna asked, unable to take her eyes off Argos's face.
"Famous?"
"Yeah, they say he's a real nutcase, and with witch blood in his veins, it's no wonder."
"Witch's blood."
Pisco's mouth watered with excitement at Kanna's reaction to his words.
Then he whispered a secret to Kanna.
"Yes, because the witch gave birth to that blond prince."
"Is that true?"
"Of course it is. Have you ever seen me talk nonsense?"
"..."
"And someone sent that witch to God's side."
Kanna turned fully in the direction of where Pisco was standing.
"Who was that?"
"My cousin who lives in Cologne."
Kanna rolled her eyes, and Pisco muttered low.
"A famous executioner."
"So the prince's mother was executed because she was a witch, and it was your cousin who executed her?"
Pisco’s voice lowered than it had been a moment ago when he answered her question.
"Not just any witch, but a very wicked witch."
"How do you know that?"
"She took girls who had nowhere else to go, slit their throats, and drank their blood. To stay beautiful."
"..."
"A maid with a fair face, she slashed her cheeks with her broken nails, leaving deep scars."
Kanna listened to Pisco's words with an expressionless face.
"And finally, she was caught trying to kill the queen. She was the king's favorite, so she could get away with anything, but she couldn’t be forgiven for coveting her position."
"..."
"That's why a man must know his fractions."
Pisco emphasized the last sentence, but it didn't reach Kanna's ears. Kanna was glad she could understand Argos's anxiety. Moreover, it was heartening to read his sense of nervousness. She glanced back and forth between Finberg and Argos.
The tightly set lips relaxed of their own accord.
"Kanna."
Pisco's voice touched Kanna's cheek.
"I can see what you're thinking."
"No, you'll never know."
Kanna scoffed, and Pisco licked his lips with his tongue.
"I thought you wanted to be up there?"
Kanna tried to deny it, but she couldn't come up with a straight answer. Pisco had hit the exact spot in her imagination.
"Baby, if you look up, you'll only snap your neck. You're lucky it's just a snap, or they’ll chop your pretty little neck."
He lifted Kanna's hair, revealing her pure white neck. Pisco leaned in close, as if to kiss it.
"Stop it."
Kanna roughly shook off his touch.
"I thought I told you to get lost."
She already knew that God made a mistake, but she already had a whole plan to undo it, and today was the start of it.
Kanna let out a long breath.
Then she turned and looked up at Pisco.
"You want to bet with me?"
"What bet?"
Kanna said, her voice stern as her eyes turned to split.
"Whether I can get up there or not."
