Chapter 8

    ****

"Ah….as I told you on my coming-of-age day, I'm looking for the son of the Marquis of Eridov."

Then Frelona's expression turned puzzled, wondering why she was looking for him.

"Because he helped me with something."

Euris blurted out. Frelona still wondered what kind of help her housebound daughter could have gotten, but she didn't say anything and gave her his location.

"Go out to the garden. The young men are gathered there playing cricket."

Euris followed her mother’s words and came out to the mansion garden. The spring sun shone on the green garden. The Duke's mansion was spacious and beautiful.

A man-made blue lake shone brightly among the lush greens. Next to the lake was a grassy clearing where men and women were playing cricket.

Cricket was a sport similar to golf where you hit a small ball with a long stick and put it in a goal, and since you only need a garden to play it, it caught on and became a favorite pastime of the aristocracy.

Since it was a relatively easy sport that could be played in a skirt, there were quite a few young ladies in the crowd.

Alongside the beautiful trees were rows and rows of pure white awnings. There were a few people sitting and relaxing on the loungers under the awnings, and Kylan was among them.

He sat idly by, not bothering to hit a ball, his pale skin standing out against the black procoat he wore.

He had a dark look on his face, and Euris’s heart felt a little heavy, as if it was her own fault.

As the younger girls stared at him and whispered, she was reminded of how popular Kylan had been in the past.

Euris deliberately turned away from him and approached the gathering of people.

She could feel Kylan's eyes on her, as if he'd spotted her from afar, but she deliberately avoided eye contact.

He was probably surprised to see her introverted self at the party.

Euris averted her gaze with effort, then looked around widely, remembering her purpose for coming here.

    ‘Where's Chaint?’

On the cricket field, men swung their sticks with glee. A spring breeze blew under a clear sky. People were enjoying the sunshine and the warm spring breeze.

In the center of the crowd was an unusually tall, handsome man. Dressed casually in a white shirt and black pants, he swung his stick with a smooth motion.

With a cheerful pop, the ball left the starting line.

With a bright smile on his face that seemed more appropriate for summer, he watched the ball arrive at its destination.

    Chaint Eridov.

Euris couldn't take her eyes off the figure, frozen in place like a person struck by lightning.

The twenty-two-year-old Chaint was glowing. As the ball sailed into the goal, other young men around him high-fived him.

He grinned, showing his gap-toothed smile, and clapped back. Then he swept a hand through his thick, light brown hair.

The youngsters around him stared enviously. He was dressed in a white shirt and a handsome smile, and he blended into the garden landscape like a picture.

At the sight of his face, Euris’ legs shook as if they would give way. She closed her eyes and remembered the last time she had seen him, lying in his coffin.

But if she fell here, she would attract attention.

Barely balancing herself, Euris sank into a nearby armchair. Her gaze remained fixed on Chaint.

He handed his stick to the servant who was attending to him, took his coat from him, and walked over to Yuris, not because he was conscious of her, but because the seat was empty.

"Chaint, are you resting for your next turn?"

    "Uh, yeah. One turn."

Another young master called out to him from a short distance away, and Chaint answered lightly. He turned his gaze toward them.

He plopped down beside Yuris and filled a goblet on the kitchenette table with water.

    Euris held her breath.

After quenching his thirst, he noticed the shadowy figure of a woman sitting in the chair next to him.

He greeted her simply. It was a common courtesy for someone he didn't know very well.

"It's a good time of year for exercise."

Chaint's voice was younger and clearer than she remembered. Euris nodded. He didn't see the nod because his gaze wasn't directed her way.

She took a breath, trying to calm her pounding heart.

Chaint was watching the others intently. He hadn't yet clearly recognized the woman next to him.

    "Chaint."

Euris called his name somewhat impulsively, and the man sitting next to her turned around with a formal smile. She added with a smile, hiding her recalled emotions.

"How are you doing with the stones?"

Surprise flashed across the man's face as he recognized her.

    "......Euris?"

‘You really do remember my name.’

The sound of her own name from his lips sent a storm of memories whirling through her mind.

When she looked into his blue, life-filled eyes again, she felt as if she might burst into tears at any moment.

She felt the corners of her eyes heat up and she covered them with her hands.

    "Are you okay?"

A worried voice followed, and how she missed hearing it in her ear. Euris gritted her teeth and fought back tears.

She couldn't cry. How embarrassing it would be for her to suddenly cry in front of him. Besides, this was a social setting, and a single tear could create a scandal.

"I must have something in my eyes."

She lowered her hand again, barely able to contain her emotions. Then she came face to face with a wall that still held a worrisome glow.

Euris hadn't come to make him her husband again.

In her last life, she had been a bad wife who had never given him any love, who had only expected to receive it............

She thought it would be unscrupulous to covet his place by her side in this life. Besides, he would have no feelings for her now.

'He’s alive and well, that's enough.’

The need to be with him screamed at her, but she pushed it away.

‘I've seen him alive, and that's enough. Let's not meddle in his life this time, because there are plenty of things I could do to make him happier.’

What she would do in this life was.......

‘Just stop the war, so the people I love don't die.’

It was the most important thing. The war had started all the tragedies in her last life. All the people she owed had died in the war. So in this life, she was going to repay that debt.

But she didn't know where to start in order to stop the war. It was something she would have to think about seriously from now on.

    "Let's see."

But this man was too kind. When she said she had a foreign object in her eye, he leaned in close. With a look of concern on his face, he scrutinized her eyes. His familiar scent wandered to the tip of her nose.

"It's spring, so there must be a lot of pollen flying around."

The touch under her eyes was tender. It was almost as if the old Chaint had come back to life. If she ignored the fact that he was dead, she felt like she was back in the days when they were a couple.

    "You remember me."

Euris’s voice echoed in Chaint’s ears.

    "Of course."

His tone was light, as if he wasn't surprised.

Euris thought of her parents' status. Especially her mother, a socialite. It occurred to her that it was not particularly surprising that the children of noble families knew her daughter.

Come to think of it, she'd been greeted by a lot of strangers today. She was reading too much into it.

Euris, whose chest was swelled with unnecessary anticipation, stood up from her seat, thinking, ‘That's right, it would be weird if I talk more.’

"It's hot out, so I'm going to go inside. It was a pleasure to meet you. Master Chaint."

She said with a polite smile and was about to turn away when someone stepped in front of her. It was Kylan.
